Chapter 8

Changing

She was different. How exactly, she couldn’t say. There were a few things she had noticed. One was a voice in her head. With all that was going on, it was no surprise she was going crazy. This new voice seemed to have an opinion on everything. At least it seemed reasonable about most things and even had some good advice. The last thing she needed was a crazy voice in her head that urged her to do violence or other destructive things like some of her clients had.

I would never. The voice said and sounded offended.

“Who are you?” She asked.

I am part of you. I am your cat. The voice admitted.

Was she changing? He’d bitten her, she remembered that. She’d even bitten him back. Hadn’t that just been sex? It wasn’t looking like that. Not just sex, my human. He mated you.

How did I not realize that? Why didn’t he say something. What do I do now?

We are mated. He must have thought you knew. What do we do? We will live with our mate, of course. Soon, we will change. Also, we need to learn to fight.

She was right. Most of her changed cousins had been challenged and Seth was a leader. It wasn’t like she’d been much of a fighter. Not since she was young. Everyone knew hillbillies fought, but that had been so long ago. Her mom would help her. So would Ariel. They would whip up on her, but that was how you learned, right? How would she find the time with so much going on and would she go into heat?

I will help you too. We have some natural skills to build on.

It was good that she had something to start with. Pulling out her phone, she called. “What took you so long?” Her mom asked.

“I just figured it out. My cat explained things.”

“Come here and we’ll get started.”

It was the middle of her day but what choice did she have? She left someone in charge at each location and went to see her mom. “Will you be okay since you’re expecting?”

“We’re not gonna fight crazy. And you need to worry more about you. At least you’ve worked hard so you’re in good shape. Maybe you’ll remember your skills from when you were younger.”

They began to move around, and her mom knocked her down. They weren’t even really fighting yet but her mom was taking her down often. At least she made it harder for her.

“It’s lunch time. You’d best go. Come back tomorrow.” Her mom directed.

Had she not had the extra strength and toughness her cat had given her, she’d be sore as hell and unable to walk. Getting back to work was for the best, but it was time to eat first. Seth was waiting with food almost like he’d expected this. Of course, how had he? Was something wrong? Nothing is wrong. Her cat said. This is the way it should be.

“I hope you’re hungry?” Seth asked.

“Starved.”

He set the food out on the picnic table where they sat and ate.
